Privacy Policy

1. Your diary stays on your device

You do not need to create a Before It Fades account. The App saves your diary and presentation preferences locally on your device. We do not operate a server that receives or stores the contents of your diary, and we cannot remotely read, retrieve, or restore writing that remains only on your device.

A letter to your future self is saved inside the App. The envelope and delivery animations do not send your writing by email, post, or messaging services to us or another person.

Local storage does not mean that no information ever leaves your device. Store purchases, a backup you choose to save to an external service, operating-system backups, and information you send to support are explained below.

2. Information the App handles

Diary content and associated details

The App stores the memories and letters you write, their dates and times, chapter names and selections, chapter history, and information needed to manage future letters. This includes a letter’s opening date or chapter condition, delivery and repeat settings, and delivered or read status. We use this information on your device to display your diary, calendar, history, and letters.

Your writing may contain sensitive information about you or other people. You decide what to write. The App does not require you to provide health information, details about your intimate life, or other sensitive personal information.

Personalisation and preferences

The App stores the name or nickname you enter, language, character and partner selections, avatar skin and hair settings, sound and music preferences, reminder settings, and tutorial progress. These settings support the experience you choose. Character and partner selections are presentation choices; we do not use them to infer or profile your real-world identity, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or relationships.

Purchase information

If you use Premium, the App communicates with the App Store or Google Play through Unity In-App Purchasing to obtain product information and check purchases, subscription status, and access rights. This can involve product identifiers, store receipts or transaction references, purchase status, and subscription expiry information.

Apple or Google handles payment details through your store account. We do not receive your full payment-card number or banking credentials. The store may make transaction and financial reports available to us as the developer. These reports do not contain your diary writing.

Information you send to support

If you email us, we receive your email address, your message, and any attachments or other information you choose to provide. We use these to answer your request, investigate problems, and maintain necessary support records. Please avoid sending private diary entries or complete backup files unless they are necessary for the support you request. You can usually describe a problem without sharing your writing.

3. Backups, transfers, and restoration

The App can create local safety copies of your saved diary. These can contain earlier versions of content, including content you later delete. Copies made before restoration and files created for export can also remain in the App’s storage. Local safety copies are stored on the same device; they do not protect against losing that device or all of its App data.

You can also choose to export a .bifbackup file using the system file picker. Depending on your device and installed services, you may save it to local Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or another location you select. The App does not automatically upload your diary to a backup service operated by us, and we do not receive a copy of an export merely because you create it.

Backup files include saved memories, future letters, chapter history and names, and supported character and appearance settings. They do not transfer store purchases, subscription entitlements, or operating-system notification permissions. Some device preferences may need to be set again.

Backup files are not password protected or encrypted by Before It Fades. Someone who obtains the file may be able to read its contents, including letters that have not yet opened in the App. File-integrity checks are not encryption. Choose a storage location you trust and protect access to your device and cloud account.

When you restore a backup, the App merges supported information into the diary on the receiving device. Restoring an older file may bring back content you previously deleted. Copies you export remain subject to the storage provider’s retention, sharing, and deletion settings.

Your operating system may also back up or restore App data independently, depending on the device, platform, and your settings. These system backups are separate from the App’s export feature.

4. Notifications and widgets

With the permissions required by your operating system, the App schedules local daily reminders and future-letter notifications. Scheduling uses your device’s date and time, reminder choices, and letter conditions. The notification messages use general reminder text rather than the body of your diary entries or letters. We do not run a remote push-notification server for these reminders.

If you use the chapter widget, the App makes a local snapshot available to the operating system and, on iOS, the App’s widget extension. This includes your current chapter’s displayed name, start date or day counter, illustration, icon, and presentation details. Your written memories and letter bodies are not included in the widget snapshot. A custom chapter name may nevertheless reveal something personal.

Widgets and notification previews can be visible to people who can see your home screen or lock screen. You can remove the widget or change notification permissions and preview settings through your device.

5. Permissions and device access

The App uses notification permission for optional reminders and the system file picker for backup files you select. It does not require access to your contacts, precise location, microphone, or camera for its current diary features. Its calendar is an internal diary calendar, not access to your device’s calendar account. Avatar illustrations are provided by the App; choosing skin or hair settings does not require a photo of you.

Denying notification permission does not prevent you from keeping a diary. Without selecting a file or destination, the corresponding backup import or export cannot be completed.

6. Third parties, advertising, and technical services

The App is built with Unity and uses Unity In-App Purchasing for store billing. We do not intentionally transmit your diary writing, chapter history, or appearance selections to Unity. The App’s own diary code does not upload this content to an analytics service or an AI service.

Apple, Google, the operating system, and any external storage or email provider you choose process information necessary to provide their own services. For example, store services handle transactions and related account or technical information, and a cloud storage provider receives a backup when you save it there. Their privacy policies explain their respective practices.

For information we actually hold, such as support correspondence or developer-side transaction records, we may use email and other administrative service providers, disclose information where legally required, or use it to establish or defend legal claims. Any disclosure must be limited to what is necessary and permitted by applicable law. This does not give us access to diary content that remains only on your device.

We do not sell your diary content or personal information, share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, use your diary to serve targeted ads, or use it to train AI models. We have not integrated an advertising network or a separate behavioural analytics service into the App’s current diary features.

7. Purposes and legal grounds

We handle information to provide the diary features you request, enable personalisation and reminders, manage Premium purchases, respond to support requests, and comply with applicable legal obligations.

Where European or UK data-protection law applies to information we process as a controller, our legal grounds are performance of our agreement with you for requested services, legitimate interests in responding to support requests and maintaining a secure and functional App, and compliance with legal obligations where relevant. Where consent is legally required, we obtain it separately and you may withdraw it. Merely using the App or accepting its Terms is not consent to unrelated optional data processing.

Processing performed by a store, cloud provider, or another independent provider is governed by that provider’s own notices and applicable legal grounds.

8. Retention and deletion

Your local diary remains on your device until you delete content or remove the App’s stored data. You can delete memories and letters using the available controls. Deleting a memory does not automatically remove the separate chapter-history record. Deleting an item also does not erase older local safety copies, exported files, widget snapshots, or system and cloud backups.

To remove all local App information, use your device’s controls to erase the App’s data or fully delete the App, as supported by your operating system. Offloading an app or removing its home-screen icon may retain data. Separately delete exported backups and any retained system or cloud copies, and remove the widget. A later system restore or import of an older backup may restore previously saved content.

We cannot erase files stored only on your device or in an external storage account that we cannot access. We can explain the available deletion steps. We retain support correspondence and developer-side purchase records only for as long as reasonably necessary for their stated purpose, resolving disputes, and applicable legal, tax, or accounting obligations. Provider-held information follows the provider’s own retention rules.

Deleting the App or its data does not cancel a paid subscription. Cancel renewal in the store through which you subscribed.

9. Security

We rely on the operating system’s application storage protections and restrict the App’s access to what its features require. The App does not add a separate diary password, biometric lock, or end-to-end encryption to its stored entries or exported backups. A sealed envelope or a future opening date is a presentation and scheduling feature, not a cryptographic lock.

Use a device passcode, keep your operating system updated, and protect your backup locations. No storage method or software can guarantee complete security or prevent all data loss.

10. Your rights

Depending on the laws that apply to you, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a portable copy of personal information, restrict or object to processing, withdraw consent where processing relies on it, and complain to a data-protection authority. These rights have conditions and exceptions under applicable law. We do not make decisions with legal or similarly significant effects about you through automated profiling.

Much of your diary information is accessible only through your device. You can view it in the App, delete supported items, or export a backup. For information we actually hold, such as support correspondence, send a request to beforeitfades.app@gmail.com. We may request proportionate information to verify your identity, but you do not need to send your entire diary to make a request. We respond within the period required by applicable law.

11. Children

The App is not specifically designed or marketed for children. If you are a minor, use it only where permitted by applicable law and with a parent or legal guardian’s involvement where required. We do not knowingly collect children’s personal information in violation of applicable law. A parent or guardian who believes a child has sent us personal information, for example through support email, can contact us to request appropriate action.

12. International processing

Diary content kept locally is stored on the device you use. Information sent to a store, an external backup provider, or our support email may be processed in countries other than your country of residence under the relevant provider’s arrangements. Where we are responsible for an international transfer requiring additional safeguards, we must use a lawful transfer mechanism and any safeguards required by applicable law. Contact us for information about transfers relating to data we hold.

13. This download website

When you visit the Before It Fades download website, we record privacy-conscious statistics to understand how people find the App: date and time of the visit, approximate country (country level only, provided by our hosting provider), device type, operating system, browser language, referring website, campaign (UTM) parameters, and which store button you used or were redirected to. We do not store your full IP address; an anonymous identifier is derived using a hash that changes daily and cannot be used to identify you.

The website does not use advertising or tracking cookies. It uses your browser's local storage only to remember your chosen language. These statistics are stored with our database provider and kept only as long as needed to measure the reach of the App.

14. Changes and contact

We may update this Policy to reflect changes in the App or legal requirements. We will update the date above and provide additional notice or obtain consent where required. A future change to this Policy does not by itself authorise us to upload existing local diary content for a new purpose.
